PATMOS - THE HOLY ISLAND
Patmos
Called 'Jerusalem of the Aegean', Patmos is an island whose atmosphere is most biblical and peaceful.
Patmos is the most northern of the group of islands known as the Dodecanese, on the northwest of the Aegean Sea in between Ikaria and Leros islands, very close and accessible by Effesos, Turkey. Patmos is of volcanic origin and has a beautiful laced coastline. An isthmus only a few hundred meters wide, on which the island's harbour lies, separates the north end of the island from the southern half.
The Monastery of St. John the Divine
As you approach Patmos you cannot miss the monastery dedicated to the memory of St John the Divine (Agios Ioannis o Theologos), perched high above the island’s highest peak, surrounded by the Venitian town and capital of the island, Hora. Hora and the Monastery of St. John were recently declared by UNESCO, a ‘World Heritage Site’, therefore ensuring its' protection and preservation.
It was here on Patmos, that St. John the Divine, the beloved pupil of Jesus, was exciled in the 1st century, by the Romans. In one of the many caves of the island, he had a vision of God, who dictated to him that he should write what he heard in a book. This he did, and it is now the final book of the bible, the prophetic ‘Book of Revelations’. Our island is very sacred to christianity and thousands of pilgrims from around the world visit the cave where St. John wrote this book. The cave is now known as the “Cave of the Apokalypse”.
